From Buenos Aires, we hopped on a ferry and 45 minutes later arrived in the colonial town of Colonia, Uruguay. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonia,_Uruguay As Andrew´s mom, Kay, spent 2 years in Uruguay while she was working in the Peace Corps, we had a magical feeling crossing the river-estuary from Argentina to Uruguay.
Colonia is the oldest established town in Uruguay - founded in 1680 by the Portuguese. It is a quiet, clean, and beautiful place - quite a difference from the noise of the city. Have we mentioned that the meat is just as good in Uruguay as it is in Argentina?
These days, there is a wonderful old colonial section of the town with beautifully restored colonial houses and buildings. There are yummy restaurants and touristy little shops selling sweaters and assorted tchochkas. A few miles´walk from the old, colonial section is a bull-fighting ring that was built, but never used, because Uruguay passed a rule against bull-fighting soon after the building was created; it is currently falling into pieces.
Apparently Colonia rivals Havana, Cuba in the quantity of running and restored old American cars. We were delighted to see so many cars - as you can tell from the amount of pictures we took of them!
