Day Trip to Macchu Pichu

2 September 2006

We awoke at 5:15 to catch the train to Aguas Calientes. . . Gorgeous ride through the Andes. As we arrived at Aguas Calientes, Andrew turned to me and said "let´s pull a NY", which to him meant run to the door get off first and beat the crowds. So we ran out the front door of the train hardly waiting for it to stop. Plowed through the local market and we were the first to hop on the bus which took us straight (okay, zig-zagged at nauseating heights) up the mountain to the entrance of Macchu Pichu. We had heard from many to immediately climb HuaynuPichu, which is the giant mountain that overlooks MP. (You can see it in the background of the MP picture above). So we heeded this sage advise, and immediately climbed a very steep mountain...as if we weren´t already high enough. Sure enough, the view of MP is incredible from HP (see pictures). I climbed 3/4 of the way and stopped at a very comfortable view, while Andrew continued on up to the peak - which he explained as a cross between bouldering and hanging on to his life by the skin of his fingernails - I was happy to have stopped with a magnificent view and my heart still intact. Macchu Pichu is an incredible ruin - so much is still standing and the views are breathtaking. . . its reputation speaks for itself.

Amazing photos! Macchu Pichu looks so deserted, were there not a lot of other people there? I like the goat- looks like he might be contemplating eating Andrew's hat...

That one photo that's sort of a close-up of one of the structures makes me think of an M.C. Esher painting the way it just sort of just out. Looks like an amazing day! Love the goat.
