1 December 2006
We traveled North for one hour to the town of Puerto Madryn which is located near the Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its importance as a nature reserve.
Puerto Madryn is similar to other coastal towns we have visited around the world, so there is not much to be said about the town itself - lots of seafood restaurants. It´s really a starting point to checking out the Peninsula. We rented a car and headed off in the morning. Stopping at the isthmus of the peninsula, we went on a whale-watching trip where we saw uncountable numbers of Southern Right Whale. Their young were born about 4 months ago, and we watched many mothers nursing their young.
We then headed off for a drive around the Peninsula, where we saw a small breeding colony of Sea Lions and Elephant Seals, and a small breeding colony of Magellanic penguins.
In addition, we saw a large variety of wildlife:
-Burrowing Owl
-(a feisty) Armadillo
-Guanacos (related to llama)
-hawks and falcons
-Lesser Rheas (a pack crossing the road - see photo)
-Tinamou (resemble grouse)

Great pictures! Hey, you guys should check out this blog, which is written by a political blogger I read frequently. He's currently traveling in South America too, and you might enjoy reading his observations on places you've been or are going to go...
yes, isn't the armadillo hysterical??!
eric, i checked it out - very interesting indeed. . .
Okay guys, you've leaped beyond Olson's ability to ask questions in Spanish about the animals. "Como se llama perro?"
Ah the armadillo. Not blessed with great beauty. But he makes up for it in personality, no?
